Statement by New York State Independence Party Chairman Frank MacKay March 26, 2017
Albany, NY—The Independence Party has been proud to have a diverse range of candidates run on its line- whether it's Andrew Cuomo, Senators John Flanagan, Andrea Stewart-Cousins or Jeff Klein.
We don't often weigh in on policy, but different times call for different measures. New York State politicians who run on our line have the opportunity to do good things.
One, we can raise the age of criminal responsibility so that New York is no longer one of only two states left in the country that allows 16 year olds to be tried as adults. It is imperative that the state ensures that 16 and 17 years olds receive the treatment and programming they need to break the repeated cycle of mass incarceration.
Two, we have the opportunity to create a new standard in Higher Education. New York State must make it a priority to make college affordable for all students including immigrants. That means providing access to scholarships and tuition assistance to every student--regardless of immigration status. Ensuring a quality education for these children will strengthen our States workforce. It is time to bring these young people out of the dark into the light of the American Dream.”
